Anti-spam protection

Anti-spam protection prevents you and your visitors from receiving spam originating from your own site. Once protection is enabled, a box (called a Captcha) appears on the contact page showing two words that the customer must read and retype in the appropriate field.

Anti-spam protection is implemented with Google™ reCAPTCHA™. To use the service you must have a Google account (for example Gmail) and follow the instructions below.

Generate the Private Key and Public Key

To activate anti-spam protection you need to generate two keys for your site.

  1. Go to: https://www.google.com/recaptcha/admin
  2. Click the + button in the top right.
  3. Under Label enter the name of your site.
  4. Under reCAPTCHA type select Verification (v2).
  5. Immediately below, among the options that appear, check Invisible reCAPTCHA badge.
  6. Under Domains enter the domain of your store. The domain to enter is also shown in the admin under Settings > Emails > Anti-spam protection.
  7. Click SUBMIT. Two keys will be generated.
  8. Copy the site key and the secret key.

Enable anti-spam protection

Before enabling protection you must obtain the two keys as described above.

  1. Go to the Settings section.
  2. Go to the Emails subsection.
  3. Next to Anti-spam protection click Edit.
  4. Enter the Public Key (site key) and the Private Key (secret key), previously generated, in the respective fields.
  5. Choose the theme for displaying the captcha.
  6. Click Save.

Once anti-spam protection is enabled, the captcha will be displayed on the contact page and on the Share with Friends page of the site.

Email sending method

The email sending method indicates how emails are sent. There are two possible choices:

Sendmail is a program, usually always present on Linux systems, that allows sending emails. Choose Sendmail if Sendmail is installed on your server and specify the path on the server where the program resides.

The SMTP server is any program running on your server or another server on the Internet that supports the SMTP protocol for sending mail. If an SMTP server is running on your server, or you have access to another SMTP server on another computer, choose Smtp and specify the host name and port on which it is running.

To configure the email sending method:

  1. Go to the Settings section.
  2. Go to the Email subsection.
  3. At the bottom of the page, find Email sending method and click Edit.
  4. Select Sendmail or Smtp.
  5. If you chose Sendmail, enter the server path where the sendmail program resides. If you chose Smtp, enter the host name and port where the Smtp server is running.
  6. Click Save.

To verify that email sending works correctly, you can use the contact us page on the site. In case of error, the page will show details.
